The Hungarian Straw Builders Association, a Fejlődő Kalazóért Egyesület (For Developing Kalazno Association) and the Municipality of Kalaznó are organizing an event called FACADE RENEWAL WITH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Location: Kalaznó, Tolna County
Date: 01.10. – 05.10. 2025.
WHAT DOES THE FACADE OF A BUILDING MEAN TO US??
The family house is a personal building type, most tailored to the individual and family.
Beyond this, there is a part/element that is not only an individual but also a common matter. It communicates with its environment, the local community. Thus, it does not only affect the given farmer and owner, but is a creative element of the built environment surrounding it. The streetscape is the imprint of the given community.
“The main facade is the gable, the decoration of which is related to the financial and social status of the builder. We can read from it the position of its owner in the village, his progressive or conservative way of thinking (Bakó F. 1978: 103; Cs. Tábori H. 1982: 211). There is no doubt that its design and decoration go hand in hand with the emphasized division of the facade wall and, within it, the gable. The instinctive decoration, “the coveted beauty, the new detail and form stolen from the eye” is placed here, in the most exposed place of the end facade (Vargha L. 1954a: 83)”
“I note that not every house is suitable for plaster moldings, it cannot be treated as an inorganic addition. Therefore, I am sometimes forced to reject such demands. A well-behaved house is just like a well-behaved person: it cannot afford anything. This genre is the organic construction of the building and the humanity associated with it, not a question of mastering a technique. To put it more succinctly: it is not wallpapering. We can see enough of that in Italy, from the Renaissance. That is why I would not like building embroidery to become a fashion and be diluted.” Grátz Antal
OUR MISSION, CONCEPT
In most of our villages and communes, there are a large number of houses built using traditional techniques, the improvement and beautification of which is based on the local community strength, supported by appropriate preparation and organization and appropriate professional assistance (intellectual and practical). Local team building, getting to know the countryside, discovering local values
HOW? – TEAMWORK BASED ON PROFESSIONALISMOGYAN?
The teams are formed in such a way that each one has the basic technical/artistic background knowledge, which enables them to work independently (professionals/students of vocational schools and universities), which is supplemented by possibly existing local masters.
They can be joined by homeowners and local residents who do not have sufficient professional experience, but have the enthusiasm and desire to act. We provide them with the necessary professional mentoring, depending on the level of their knowledge.
WHAT? – We organize an event, where in 5 days in a village or town, the street facades of as many as 4-5 folk buildings will be renewed and beautified. Teams of 4-5 people will work on the facades. We will carry out the necessary preventive work in advance on the buildings selected for implementation, such as planning, construction organization, and material procurement.
